Athena in the Odyssey vs. Virgil in the Inferno Essay
Athena in the Odyssey VS. Virgil in the Inferno Two of the greatest works ever written, The Odyssey by Homer and The Inferno by Dante, are detailed, multi-sectioned poems about the journeyââ¬â¢s of two men. In each story, the main character is given some sort of guidance by another character in order to aid them in their travels. In The Odyssey, Athena is portrayed as the protector to Odysseus on his journey back home from the Trojan War to his family in Ithaca. In The Inferno, Virgil is requested to lead Dante through the depths of Hell in order to save his soul. Many similarities can be seen between the two characters as they both served as advice givers, protectors, and guides for the main character. While the two guides seem veryâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Athena appears to Odysseus in the form of Mentor and tries to motivate Odysseus to kill all the suitors off with threats and accusations. She even commands the suitors to through their spears at Odysseus all at once. ââ¬Å"At his command,/ concentrating their shots, all six hurled as one/ but Athena sent to whole salvo wide of the markâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Ody. 22. 267-269). Odysseus sees that all of his men are untouched by the suitorââ¬â¢s spears, and this action propels him to take charge and lead an attack on the suitors. Each time Athena guides or protects Odysseus, itââ¬â¢s in order to save his life. She desperately wants Odysseus to get home because Odysseus is a war hero and a King, very much deserving of a safe return home. Athena thinks very highly of Odysseus because he is such a great warrior and she feels he exemplifies the virtue of excellence. Itââ¬â¢s easy to see how the ideals of society on life and death in Homerââ¬â¢s 7th Century BC times are portrayed through Athenaââ¬â¢s help. The people of this time were most concerned on how you lived your life during the time you had. For them there was no glorious afterlife, so there was no need to try and save your soul to reap the prize of a great time after death. Homer uses Athena as Odysseusââ¬â¢s guide to get back home and live out the rest of his life the way he pleases. Heââ¬â¢s spent his time as a warrior and won his most important battles before the beginning of the poem, so now he deserves to live out the rest of his life in peace with

Moldau By Smetana Essays - Symphonic Poems, M Vlast, Bedich Smetana
Moldau By Smetana Composer: Bedrich Smetana Work Title: The Moldau. For my first selection of music for this final project I chose "The Moldau" by Bedrich Smetana. The reason I chose this piece was first, it is a symphonic poem and second, because it perfectly exemplified the use of nationalist style and word painting. The Moldau is a symphonic poem representing Nationalist pride for Smetana's country. It is the second of six symphonic poems from the orchestral piece "My Country". A symphonic poem is a one-movement orchestral form that, in this case, suggests a scene. It was written over a five-year span that covered the revolution against Austrian rule. The Moldau is a perfect example of a nationalist song, which is a song of folk pride for one's country. The piece "The Moldau" represents scenes along the river Moldau in Bohemia. It is here that we see the use of word painting, music expressed as though it were a painting to be seen. It begins as a few streams in the forest flowing into the mighty river, painted with a flute and some clarinets and leading to violins. The journey takes us through a day in the forest where we see hunting, peasants dancing at a wedding, nymphs in the moonlight, the St. John's Rapids, the Ancient Castle and back to the River theme as the river dies away. It is truly an enchanting piece.

Rome becomes a world leader essays
Rome becomes a world leader essays As Hannibal defeated the Carthaginians, their power increased, conquering Sicily, Spain, and Sardinia. Their expansion did not stop there but continued towards east. They subjugated Macedonia, Greece, and Asian Minor. However, since their territories were enormous, they had kept armies all around the Mediterranean Sea. In 146 B.C., city of Corinth was destroyed and its inhabitants were sold as slavery as consul Lucius Memmius came to an action. The speech made to the Senate, Carthago delenda est, had also demonstrated the hatred toward the Carthage of the Romans. This eventually resulted in the Third Punic War which lasted from 149-146 B.C. At this time, the Roman Senate had increasing power because when they were elected as a Senator, their job remained forever. With their power, they controlled over foreign and domestic policies and looked over finances. The Latin word, nobiles, which resembles the English word nobles, were high class people with most of the influential jobs. They organized provinciae so the jobs can be distributed into local regions. With the money gained from the provinces, Roman senators bought latifundia, large estates, which brought more organized and profitable agriculture. These profits were mainly from middle class who were meeting the success in commerce. These changes were long-term processes that were undergone long before the wars. Through their interaction with Greeks, they began to adapt to some of their cultures. Their gods, farming techniques, and religious rituals were similar. Not only that, Romans learned literatures, art, and science from Greeks. For example, Livius Andronicus tr ansformed the Greek play into Roman play in 240B.C. The changes that were brought to Romans were not threatening but enjoyable and successful opportunities for them. The great intellectuals were found during this time and the influence of Greeks help them in many ways. Later, this became known as Greco-Roman culture...

Should capital punishment be suspended because of the chance of Research Paper
Should capital punishment be suspended because of the chance of executing an innocent person - Research Paper Example Abolition is becoming the norm and those who advocate for the death penalty face important challenges in the 21st century. For example, the United Nations and the European Union (EU) recently debated the legitimacy of the death penalty and world opinion is moving towards its abolition. The European Union, through its Charter of Fundamental Rights, has led the way and successfully banned the death penalty in all of its member states. Thus, if a country wishes to become a member of the EU and has the death penalty as a punishment on the books, that will need be overruled for the death penalty to become a member. This is just an example of how the tide is turning against advocates of the death penalty in the 21st century. Seeking to explore capital punishment and ask whether or not it is a good thing, the following will explore the deterrence argument for the death penalty and persuasively argue that the death penalty is not a good thing and should be banned. Furthermore, this paper wil l argue that lethal injection runs contrary to the prohibition against ââ¬Å"cruel and unusual punishmentâ⬠and because the consequences of the death penalty are irreversible, it should be abolished worldwide (The Death Penalty Information Centre 2009; Hood 3). From an ethical standpoint, advocates of the death penalty argue that the death penalty serves to deter criminals and thus is effective in preventing crime. According to the well-respect British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the consensus among researchers in the field is that the deterrent aspect of the death penalty has yet to be proven. Furthermore, a survey on the subject was undertaken by the United Nations (UN) in an attempt to look at the relationship between the death penalty and homicide rates. According to this published analysis, the United Nations concluded that ââ¬Å"research has failed to
